Right out of high school, I went to the University of Missouri-Columbia, and got a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture (and graduated summa cum laude). For actual money, I did graphic design. For several years, I worked as a graphic designer and did my fine art on the side. Finally, realizing that I wanted a profession where I got to work directly with people that still required artistic talent, I went back to school to pursue interior design. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, this time in interior design, from Mount Mary College (now University), also summa cum laude. During school, I interned for Retailworks, Inc., after I saw the president of the company, Lyn Falk, speak to one of my classes. They liked me enough to hire me after the internship, so now I am a Senior Interior Designer there, specializing in retail store design. It’s a good gig—I use all of my backgrounds in it. Graphic design comes in handy for all the branding necessary in retail spaces, fine art allows me to think outside the box to suggest incorporating artistic elements that make a space special, and my interior design degree allows me to lay out the space to building code, while making it functional (and fun) for the people within the space. But, retail store design doesn’t often allow me to indulge my love of furniture and fabrics, and I don’t get to help people in their personal spaces. I’d love to do a project with you—it will be fun to meet and assist you!

“I feel that there’s nothing more genuinely artistic than to love people.”

— Vincent Van Gogh
